FAB Woman: Priya Kumar

An Engineer-turned-Bharatanatyam & Contemporary dancer, Priya Kumar turned her dream into reality when she founded Piah Dance Company. For a long while, she had known that dance was her life, her passion & it defined what happiness meant to her. Then came that day when she decided to leave her corporate job and yield to the calling. It was time to make dance… her life.

FAB Woman: Priya Kumar

Ask Priya about one mantra that has made her persevere through all odds and pat comes the reply –  “Life is too short to keep making the world happy, so do yourself a favor and keep yourself happy. Each one owes that to themselves”. You go, girl! Today Priya is a professionally-trained dancer who performs, organizes, choreographs & conducts dance workshops & events for students, corporates and women alike. Her recent contemporary folk production “Bandhani” has received rave reviews this January and she is determined on taking her art beyond India in the days to come. With a heady mix of talent, swag and determination – we cannot see anything… absolutely anything keeping this lady from soaring to wherever she wills.

Needless to say, our chat with Priya left us inspired and here are some snippets that’ll bring you closer to her!

FAB BAG: So tell us, what’s that one beauty tip that you can always fall back on?
Priya : A tall glass of vegetable juice morning and evening. Works so much better than anything else. Also, tea tree oil anytime a pimple erupts.

FAB BAG: One movie you can never have enough of?
Priya:  The movie “The Holiday” starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Jude Law. I always fall back on the movie when I’m stressed, it is like a virtual holiday for me.

FAB BAG: What’s the one message that you’d like to give to our members?
Priya : You are much better than what you think you are.

Newspaper features: Featured in the Bangalore Mirror for her “Bandhani” performance. Also featured in the Times of India, Bangalore.

Parting Shot: Giving up a “safe and secure” life that you’ve been brought up to live, only to follow a dream is not easy. Building something from scratch is a difficult and sometimes lonely road that most people prefer not to risk. With hard work, dedication, determination and above all hope – Priya has achieved a lot in a short span of time and lives everyday to make this reality bigger and better. For all those reading this, we just have one message for you – Be your own advisor, don’t let the universe make decisions for you.
