FAB WOMAN: Lizzie Chapman
An Investor turned Entrepreneur, Founder of Mumbai’s first authentic boutique hotel ‘Abode’, one of the fastest women marathon runners in the country, Elizebath “Lizzie” Chapman, is a house of talent who believes “There are only two mistakes to make on this journey of life; not going all the way, and not starting”
A Londoner who has now made Mumbai her home, Lizzie is the founder of Abode; a tranquil haven of beautiful design and luxurious accommodation. Mumbai’s first authentic boutique hotel which is a complete expression of the city, celebrating its magic with chic, modern interpretations of historical features and paying subtle homage to Bombay’s heritage and bohemian past. Abode is a two level hotel which has high end luxury rooms along side with tiny but stylish smaller basic rooms, meant for freelancers, designers, and other artsy sorts travelling on a budget. The hotel’s location is indeed enviable as it is walking distance from the many attractions in Colaba, Kala Ghoda and Fort. Before turning into an entrepreneur, she began her career at Goldman Sachs as a Business Analyst, moved on to work with Wellcome Trust as Investment Manager and then with Wonga.com as Country Head.
Running for Lizzie is a powerful form of relaxation and stress relief. No matter how hectic her schedule looks like, Lizzie always finds time to train and compete in running events. In the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon this year, Lizzie was pacing the 4.00Hrs Full Marathon Bus. In 2012 she stood second under the Female category in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and in 2013 came in Third Place. That’s not all, in 2011 she completed one of the most challenging marathons – The Antartic Ice Marathon, finishing as the 4th women. Most of the people around Lizzie have now turned to running after spending time with her and seeing how effortlessly she combines this passion with a fulfilling and sociable personal and professional life.
At the FAB BAG HQ, where running is the passion of many, the crew absolutely admires women like Lizzie, not just cause she’s probably the fastest runner we know, but because she’s an achiever in a true sense. The Crew got talking to Lizzie and she’s even more interesting to talk to. Here’s snippets of our chat
FAB BAG: What is it that keeps you motivated?
Lizzie: The belief that life is short so make every moment count. I have no tolerance for average so I am always looking for ways to do things better and make life
FAB BAG: Happiness is…?
Lizzie: Running on Chowpatty beach at sunrise, watching Bombay wake up and marvelling at how I live in one of the most amazing cities in the world.
FAB BAG: If you could go on a one-time date with anyone, who would it be?
Lizzie: I have a habit of falling in love with older clever men…at the moment it is Raghuram Rajan (new head of the RBI) – he would be my dream date
FAB BAG: If you had to start up something new, what would that be?
Lizzie: I would start a new version of money! I am obsessed with Bitcoin and other forms of virtual currency and think that it is definitely time for a new type of cash.
FAB BAG: One beauty tip that you can always fall back on?
Lizzie: When I think I look tired and run down…I get out my red lipstick
FAB BAG: What’s the one message that you’d like to give to our members?
Lizzie: Don’t be scared to fail! Often fear of failure is the only thing that holds us back from following our dreams. A great Gandhi qoute is “what would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail”
Parting Shot: To find your heart in a city other than the one you are originally from is not very easy, taking in account the change in the standard of living, as well as culture & language barriers. But Lizzie does this with ease and calls Mumbai, one of the best cities in the world. Switching from the finance sector after gaining immense knowledge and experience in the field to the hospitality sector one which she was new to only says that she’s not afraid to try new things. For those of you inspired by Lizzie always remember, “You rather fail than regret. Regret comes more from the things you don’t do, so don’t be afraid to start something because of the fear to fail“
