This humble root, home to many a grandma remedy, is a powerhouse of beauty benefits!

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a root that belongs to the ginger family, and has been used in Asian cultures for a variety of purposes. Apart from its uses in food, it is revered for its several skin care benefits, including the treatment of acne, blackheads, dark spots and hyper-pigmentation, and other skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It eases dry skin, slows the ageing process, diminishes wrinkles, reduces hair growth (when used to scrub the body), keeps skin supple and improves skin elasticity. Turmeric is used as a scrub, mask, and even an ingredient in sunscreens. If you’re worried about staining your skin with turmeric, substitute the cooking turmeric with Kasturi turmeric (Curcuma Aromatica), which is non-staining is easily available at most stores.Read on to discover the use of turmeric in some of the easiest and most effective home remedies to deal with a plethora of skin benefits:

For a Bridal Glow:

What is the most crucial ritual in preparing a bride for her big day? Why, the haldi, of course. Every Indian bride (and groom, in some cases) is smeared with a mixture of chickpea flour, turmeric, and almond oil, before the D-day. Their face and bodies are instantly exfoliated, softened and brightened. To achieve the bridal glow, use a mixture of 1 cup besan (gram flour), 3 tbsp of turmeric and almond oil/Cocunut oil (enough to form a paste). Mix into a paste, apply to the face and body, and let sit for a few minutes. Remove by rubbing the mixture vigorously with your hands. This motion will add to the exfoliation process and also help with the removal of fine body and facial hair. Wash the rest of the mixture off and enjoy brilliant skin!

For Treating Acne:

Turmeric is a wonder cure for acne owing to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It eases redness from acne and other types of scarring, reduces inflammation and evens out skin discolorations. All you need to do is mix 1 tsp turmeric and enough plain water or lemon juice to make a paste. Mix and dab onto blemishes and acne scars for 10-15 minutes, wash off for clearer skin.

For Anti-Ageing:

Turmeric is packed with anti-ageing properties. To treat wrinkles, and get supple skin, try a pinch of turmeric, ½ a cup of raw milk and a few drops of tomato juice. Mix well, and apply to face and neck for 30 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water to reveal younger, brighter skin.

For Cleansing and Exfoliating:

For clear, glowing skin, incorporate turmeric in your cleansing and exfoliation routine. For best results, mix: 1 cup of Besan (gram flour), 3-5 tbsp of kasturi turmeric and half a cup of curd (for oily skin) or raw milk (for dry skin). Apply evenly to the face and body and leave on for about 10-15 minutes. Wash the mask off with warm water. You could also mix the turmeric with your favorite facial scrub. If used regularly for a month, you should also see a reduction on hair growth.

For a Healthier Scalp:

You can even treat dandruff and other scalp issues with turmeric. Apply a mixture of turmeric and olive oil to your scalp in the shower. Allow it to set for 15 minutes, and wash out the mixture with a clear shampoo.
