TIPS & TRICKS: Artsy Nails
Need to amp your style? No need to go splurge on a beauty shoppe, just try some DIY nail art.
Funky, decorative nails are the hottest new accessory. Whether it’s the simple elegance of a French manicure or a touch of glitter, nail art can be your earrings and your handbag rolled into one. While there are several salons that offer this service, it can be fairly costly, not to mention time-consuming. As artistic as it may look, there are actually kinds of nail art you can do yourself at home pretty easily. Here are some ways you can channel your inner artist and brighten up your tips.
The essentials: Ensure you have a nail clipper, a nail file, 5-6 shades of nail paint, a top coat and a pretty-scented hand lotion at home at all times. The brush that comes with the nail paint may not be usable for all designs, so keep a thin paintbrush handy as well.
This is one of the most fun designs around and goes with pretty much anything you’ll wear. Use a white or cream base, so the dots show up bolder. Paint a thick line of dots with your nail polish brush by dabbing the brush on the nail at a 45 degree angle. Dot all over the nail – in ordered randomness. . Dots should be randomly spaced out. You can use more than one colour if you like, but keep it bright.
So you have a party to go to, but not enough time to get to the parlour? Not to worry, you can give your nails a little polish at home. To get started, you need a transparent or coloured base coat and glitter (silver or coloured – purple is my new favourite!) according to the base coat. Apply the base coat and while it’s still wet, sprinkle glitter on top of the nails. Once dry, apply the top coat on the top and there you have that sparkle!
This is an interesting design nail art. You’ll need a base coat of grey nail paint, a piece of paper that has a written print, rubbing alcohol mainly used as an antiseptic and medicated cleaner and a transparent nail enamel. Start by applying the grey base on the nails. Dip your fingers for about 30 seconds in the rubbing alcohol and then press a piece of newspaper on the nail till the print comes on the nail. Let it dry for a few minutes and cover with the transparent enamel. Your nails will, quite literally, make news.
Monochrome is in and you can flaunt it on your nails as it’s one of the easiest designs to do. Paint your nails white and let it dry. Cut cello-tape into thin (really thin!) strips and paste on nails, leaving room for stripes. The tape is to ensure your spacing is somewhat uniform. Paint black stripes (or navy blue if you want a nautical look), then carefully peel the tape off. Use a top coat to lock in the colour.
Last word: Don’t forget your friendly, neighbourhood top coat.
