IN-BOX: Aw, Natural!
Have you ever wondered why some of the OTC beauty products you buy cause more damage than good? Time to go natural…
Most “beauty” products are a concoction of chemicals, some of which you might find in your floor cleaner. Even the products which are labelled as ‘derived from natural sources’ mean that though the raw materials are natural, they might be chemically treated to get the final product. Sometimes even a minuscule amount of organic substance present in the entire bottle of cosmetics is enough for companies to market it as a natural product!
Our skin is like sponge, absorbing 60-70 percent of what we apply on it. Doesn’t that make sense to treat skin with organic products, which contain ingredients which are neither treated with synthetic pesticides, petroleum fertilizers nor are genetically modified organisms (GMO)? Our skin responds to the thumb rule of inside to the outside and vice versa. What we eat shows on our skin; inside to the outside. Similarly what we apply penetrates in our skin and the result shows off on the outer layer of skin; outside to the inside. Need some more coaxing?
- Make skin healthier: ‘Fairness in 14 days’ to ‘signs of ageing gone in 30 days’ sounds so familiar and undoubtedly score in enticing us. There are companies which can deliver what they promise but at the cost of our natural skin. The skin will be more prone to damage and may age faster after the natural property of the skin to take care of itself and mend itself drastically reduces. Organic beauty products aid in skin regeneration as they are natural products.
- Say no to parabens: The way citric acid is added to increase the longevity of pickles similarly parabens are chemicals added to beauty products to extend their shelf life. The cause for concern is that parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors and are known to slightly mimic a hormone called estrogen. Organic beauty products use grapefruit seed extract which is a natural and safe alternative to inexpensive parabens.
- Put aside skin irritants: Synthetic cosmetics contain a lot of chemicals, the prolonged exposure to these results in various types of skin problems like dry skin, clogged pores, skin rashes. These are minimized in organic products as they contain natural ingredients. So next time you complain prolonged dry skin, notice the chemicals used in your favorite bottle of moisturizer.
- Save the natural environment: Last but should be a point of concern for all of us. Synthetic products have disposal problems. Since they are chemicals, majority of them do not get disposed in the nature and hence pose serious health hazards for all of us. On the contrary organic products because of their natural properties are usually biodegradable.
