I-Spy: Colour Those Tips Mad

Your tips and toes deserve to have a little fun, especially during the dreary monsoons with colours that are a tad offbeat!

While the evergreen nail colours such as bright red, taupe and the forever elegant French manicure are always in vogue, maybe it’s time to step out of the box a little and experiment with your nails. It needn’t be nail art with sequins stuck on your pinkie, but here are a few well-known hands we spotted, sporting interesting manicures.

White knight

It may seem strange, but white nail colour is the rage this season. There’s something about pearly or ivory, luminously painted nails that celebs are going crazy over. One of the reasons is that white nail paint, like black, goes with pretty nearly everything. So whether you’re teaming it with denims and a crisp white shirt or a snazzy, sequinned top for an evening out on the town, your nails will be ready, and eye-catchingly so. The Hourglass Manicure

This is one of the coolest new nail trends around and fairly easy to get done, even if it’s a friend with a steady hand who’s on the job. Brought to the limelight by celebrity nail artist Naja Rickette, this has the gorgeous effect on making your nails look slimmer and longer and looks great on both short long nails. In its basic form, this manicure involves painting your nails with a neutral (or metallic) colour, then creating an hourglass shape down the middle with a contrasting colour. An almond-shaped nail, however, seems to suit this style best. According to Rickette, the best part about this manicure is its unlimited scope for variation. You could do a standard two-colour one, or you could use a third colour to really give it some pop.

More the merrier

It’s happened to me countless times that I’ve been sitting at the salon with a basket of nail paint bottles in my lap, completely unable to make up my mind. The vampish red, the beach-ball yellow, the mellow shell-pink, are all calling out to me. If the season’s trends are anything to go by, you don’t have to decide any longer, you can just use all three! Or four. Paint your thumb deep blue and your middle-finger bright pink while swooshing some silver on your little finger. Or paint four of your nails a light shade of pink or beige and use a bold green on one finger. Multi-coloured manicures are fun and make your nails the centre of attention.

Comic timing

This isn’t quite nail art, but it’s been seen around and if you’re a fan of superheroes (BATMAN BATMAN!!), or just a regular comic book nerd, you could keep them on your fingertips. Paint the ‘S’ for ‘Superman’ in red and blue, or the symbol for the Green Lantern. You could even paint the ‘A’ of Archie in red and white. If you don’t want to go for specific characters, make your own. Keep the colours bright and the artwork simple, and you’ll have the hottest nails in town.
