I SPY: Purple Magic

Referred to as “the little black dress of makeup” coloured smokey eyes can seriously elevate your evening look to something truly dramatic.

While dramatic eyes can make you into an instant diva, if not done right, they can also be your biggest make-up blunder. Don’t believe us, check out the comparison we made between two leading Hollywood celebrities who played up their eyes with purple.

So Right:

We all know no one can rock smoky eyes like Kim Kardashian, but she seems to have outdone herself with this lovely purple-gray version. The sparse use of purple softens her appearance and make her eyes glow. What sets this look apart is the use of the mix between grey and purple. Kim simply dusts shadow all around her eyes, close under her bottom lid and up almost under her eyebrow with a little shading going on in the creases with a darker gray. An equally understated nude lip colour and a soft pink blush keeps her looking classy and elegant…

Get the look

Tried a smokey eye makeup look and ended looking like a pirate/panda? If you have raised your hand sheepishly, then try these easy instructions to master it in a jiffy.

  • Before putting on your eye makeup, prep the surface of the skin with some extra foundation for stay-put power. As a general rule of thumb, it’s wise to apply your foundation and undereye concealer after your smoky eyes, since the color so easily falls down around the eyes and smear on.
  • Begin with eye shadow. The lightest eye shadow can be applied all over the eye lid and the darkest in the crease. Use a pearl/silver/gold to highlight the browbone. You can try pewter eye shadow all over the lid, charcoal in the crease and keep the brow bone light.
  • Line the upper lashes from corner to corner; line the lower lashes just three quarters of the way, beginning from the outer corner of the eye. For an intensely smoky eye, add some kohl to the inner rims too.
  • Plum or purple is dramatic enough to work with brown or black eyes and looks simply gorgeous. You can also play around with a purple smoky eye by applying a light mauve color to the lid, and a deep plum in the crease.

How not to do it:

Leighton Meester always seems to have her look right in Gossip Girls, so we really wonder what went wrong here. The chic diva seems to have smudged purple shadow all the way on to her temples. Lessons to be learnt from this faux pas?  Smoky eye is just that, for your eye and not outwards into your brow.  Secondly, be very careful with the purples you choose, focus on deep hues and blend them with lavenders, because the wrong shade can start to look like a bruise very quickly. Her come-hither red lips only add to her woes in this look!
