MARKET GUIDE: Un-Masking Beauty

A mask is always a quick pick-me-up for your skin. But which one to buy?

In times when time is short, facial masks make for an ideal quick-fix for your complexion. Sure, according to our grandmothers, natural home-made ingredients are the best way to go, but when you’re working a six-day week and partying seven days, buying a face mask off the shelf or online, isn’t such a bad bet. Your local supermarket will have quite a variety, but to make an informed choice, you need to get to know your skin.

Dry skin

If your skin feels rough after washing and flakes in the winter, use a mild mask or face pack. Himalaya’s Refreshing Fruit Face Pack with papaya, apple and fig is a good buy as is the their Almond and Cucumber Peel-off Mask. Shahnaz Hussain’s Honey Health Ayurvedic Mud Mask also works on dry skin as honey is a powerful moisturiser. If you feel like upping your budget, you could try the Mineral Line Mud Mask that promises your skin glycerine, aloe vera and silt from the Dead Sea.

Tip: If you have a few extra minutes, mix some almond oil (Aloe Veda’s sweet almond oil will do) and rose water to create a hydrating base before you apply the mask. Keep it on for 5-10 minutes; wipe off with cotton pads soaked in cold water.

Oily skin

Oil in your skin is produced by the sebaceous glands and while these work to keep your skin from drying up, they do tend to go into overdrive sometimes. Try Forest Essentials Multani Mitti Facial Ubtan; multani mitti is known to tighten your pores, remove excess oil and clear your skin. Another winner for oily skin is Himalaya’s Neem Face Pack. Neem is anti-bacterial and reduces inflammation so in case your skin is breaking out, this is a safe option. Everyuth’s Orange Peel-off Home Facial is also a good buy as it peels off dead cells and tightens pores. Also, orange is a source of Vitamin C which is great for balancing out your skin.

Tip: Use a scrub to gently exfoliate your skin before using the mask. This opens up your pores so the mask can penetrate deeper.

Combination skin

For those of you with an oily T-zone, while the rest of your face begs for moisture, don’t despair. The Body Shop’s 3-in-1 Blue Corn Deep Cleansing Scrub Mask is a great option for you as it cleans, exfoliates and moisturises in one go. You can also use the Khadi Herbal Sandal and Rose face pack to soothe your skin. To really pamper yourself, use Elizabeth Arden Intervene Peel & Reveal Revitalizing Treatment. Said to contain grapeseed extract and alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, this will even out the texture of your skin.

Tip: Use a gel moisturiser after you use the mask instead of a cream-based one so that you don’t overdo the moisture.

Sensitive skin

You’ve given up hope because everything you use, your skin reacts to violently. We recommend The Body Shop’s Aloe Protective Restoring Mask. Aloe is one of Nature’s gentlest remedies for almost anything and this intensive leave-on mask will take care of your skin without causing any tumult. You could also try Blossom Kochhar’s Aroma Magic Calamine Face Pack as an ultimate soothing emollient.

Tip: Most masks and face packs will recommend usage 2-3 times a week. Don’t use them more than once a week. Sometimes, less really is more.
