Tis’ the season to be jolly coz Santa Claus is coming to town. Pardon us for mixing up our carols, the December festivities are getting us high! Yes gals, the best time of the year is finally here and we know all you fashionistas are gearing up to rock those parties. Gorgeous dresses, high heels and fab skin are a must on your checklist. But wait! Do you really want to spend your holiday stash of cash on beauty treatments to get that golden glow? No way! Read on as Vellvette shows you how to get that stunning winter skin with delicious treatments using ingredients lying around the kitchen this festive season.
The lip-smacking Eggnog, we all know, is a must for this season, but did you know it makes a killer skin tightening mask? It’s super easy to prepare especially with all the spare eggnog lying around this season and best part, it really works. Mix 1/2 pack of oatmeal into 3/4 cup of eggnog. Add 1/2 tsp of flax seed oil and couple dashes of clove powder, mix it up and apply. The oatmeal has exfoliating qualities, the milk hydrates and the egg tightens the skin. Rub gently onto the face, leave for 10 minutes, remove and see the results!
Cranberries are the fruits that keep on giving. With their boosting and preventive qualities, no wonder they are such a hit at all Christmas dinners. Now, if some reason, you have extra cranberries let over, blend a handful of them with a few drops of almond oil, a pinch of sugar, some oatmeal and a drop of orange essential oil for a perfect scrub. This yummy fruit can also help reduce wrinkles and increase the elasticity of the skin. Awesome isn’t it? Blend together a few fresh cranberries and seedless red grapes, 2 tsp grapefruit juice with 1tbsp cream. Use this as a face mask that exfoliates, whitens and moisturizes all at once.
Use the leftover pumpkin skipped from the pie to indulge your locks. It’s got vitamin A which is extremely good for the scalp. Pumpkin is also especially good for moisturizing dry or damaged hair. Indulge your hair in a homemade pumpkin conditioner. Mix 2 cups of chopped and cooked pumpkin with a tablespoon of coconut oil, honey and yogurt. Once the mixture is smooth, apply it to damp hair. Cover hair with a shower cap, and let it sit for fifteen minutes. Wash out thoroughly using your everyday shampoo and conditioner, and watch your hair look delish.
Cinnamon makes the world a better place. While our coffees, buns and pastries become heavenly delicious, it’s also great for our skin. No wonder they call it the ‘spice of beauty’? Cinnamon brings blood to the surface of the skin causing minor plumping. Mix 3 drops of cinnamon oil with 2 tbsp of Vaseline or Olive oil. Apply this to fine lines and watch your skin get a healthy plump. You can also add some cinnamon to your favourite lip gloss to that Angelina Jolie pout. Cinnamon can also help rid your face or back of acne by both drying out the skin and, again, bringing blood and oxygen to the skin surface. Mix 3 tbsp of honey with 1 tbsp of cinnamon and apply the paste to pimples and leave on overnight. Or apply a thin layer to the face as a mask and leave on for about 20 mins before rinsing with warm water. Cinnamon masks can irritate the skin, so they should not be applied more than once a week.
