Eyeshadow Rules

The golden rule for eyeshadows, never go ‘matchy-matchy’!

Your outfit and make-up in harmony would make you look diva-esque. Go overboard with the ‘matchy’ outfit, accessories and make-up and you slip to disaster status. Eyeshadow colours that complement the eyes as well as the clothes are what you need to go with. Always remember that eyeshadow is worn to enhance your eyes. They need to make the whites appear whiter for your eyes to stand out and appear alluring; not to complement the colour of your dress. Most of us Indian gals have brown or black eyes (which actually gives us the whole colour palette to play with) but if you do have unusual coloured eyes (or have invested in a pair of coloured contacts), remember to choose contrasting colours… Keep ‘accent’ colours subtle – if you’re picking up a colour from your outfit, be sure that it’s just a touch along the lashline, and give it a smudge with your finger or a brush. Or go with a ‘winged‘ look.

Colour Coordinates

  • Magnetic Black/Brown: Black or brown eye colour being the darkest of all let you wear almost any colour. If you want to experiment, the best eyeshadow colours for brown eyes are golden browns, blues, greens, greys, purples and burgundy. Avoid a yellowish-brown colour as it may make your eyes appear pale and washed out.
  • Baby Blues: Usually wearing blue eyeshadow will make blue eyes look washed out. Go for contrasts such as rich browns, warm taupes, soft peach colours and greys. Green may not look flattering…
  • Witchy Green/Hazel: Golden browns, warm taupes, deep purples, soft peaches, pink, gold and soft violets work well with green and hazel eyes.
  • Alluring Grey: Grey eyes can look alluring in black, charcoal, deep greys, deep browns, cool browns and purples!

Pro Tip: Take the time to put on your eye makeup (skip the mascara) then rub your eyes (like sleepy eye rubbing). After removing the excess smudges underneath your eyes you will have a sexy, sultry look. Put on mascara to open out those peepers further!
