Brittle nails, or Onychoschizia (as it is medically dubbed), is a bothersome condition that causes your nails to crack and tear at the slightest pressure, almost as if with wear-and-tear. What causes brittle nails?
A lot of factors – dryness caused by repeated wetting and drying, exposure to harsh detergent and water, excessive use of solvents (acetone, nail polish remover, polish), lack of Vitamin D and protein in the diet (including zinc and silica). These are also caused by thyroid troubles or some serious skin diseases, among other things. First, get tested to rule out the possibility of any existing health disorder. Then, you can work on improving your diet, and reducing trauma on the nails by using softer products and reducing solvent-usage to an absolute minimum.

- Keep ‘em short: It’s imperative to keep your nails groomed and tidy at all times to avoid the possibility of breakage. I don’t allude to getting a manicure every week, but just keeping them trimmed and clean. In fact, try doing a simple manicure at home every 2 weeks; most salons aren’t as particular about cleaning their instruments as we’d like them to be, and that could aggravate your condition.
- Get some sun on your face, and the right food on your plate EVERYDAY: As easy as it may sound, most of us just aren’t getting the requisite amount of sunlight, or our daily dose of vitamins and minerals. Since, your multiple caffeine intake and salad-on-the-go will do nothing for repairing and restoring your skin, hair or your nails, here’s what will: Eating asparagus, cabbage, cucumbers, olives, radishes, white onions, corn, bell peppers, soybeans, rice, oats, millet, flax seeds, and lots of milk and yoghurt in your food, and absorbing atleast 15-20 minutes of direct sunlight each day. Do this and see your nails improve in no time.
- Wear rubber gloves when in contact with harsh soap/detergent: Your nails absorb an alarming 20-25% of their weight in water, thus, making them weak and prone to breakage. Wear rubber gloves at all times you’re in contact with water, and do not require your hands to be wet.
- Avoid acrylic products and solvents: Acetone is a very harsh solvent, and is used at most salons that know no better. Insist on using a clear nail polish remover when at home or outside, and try and keep your nails polish-free for atleast three-six months every year.
- Oil ‘em up: Dab some olive, or castor oil, on your nails and massage gently till it absorbs, and leave overnight. Do this every night, and see the change in just two-three weeks!
