How To: Audrey Look
With that slight frame, those accentuated collar bones, those delicate, elfin features, Audrey Hepburn is the stuff that dreams are made of…
Her beauty not withstanding, the depth of wisdom that this legendary woman spoke put the matter of external beauty in clear perspective. From the day that she graced the silver screen, her ethereal beauty, inimitable grace set new standards of elegance. Not just that, Hepburn’s unique personal style has since inspired a whole fashion canon of its own, interpreted and reinterpreted by legions of designers, stylists and fashionistas for decades. Hermes scarves, high ponies, fringes, capris, ballet flats, crisp white cottons, or the iconic little black dress – it all started with the original diva. While grace and charm cannot be bought at the make-up store, here is our tribute to the great woman: an essential guide to emulating her look.
Hepburn always sported that fresh-faced, almost ethereal look, with skin sparkling like the early morning dew. To get the effect of light apply the lightest shade of cashmere foundation you can get away with. Use it obliterate all traces of tan to achieve that delicate, feminine pallor. Set it with a translucent powder.
Hepburn is one of the few legends who managed to set a new trend even with her brows. Whatever be the shape of your brows, take a small stiff angle brush, widen out your eyebrows, and stipple in dark brown eye shadow or brow powder between the roots of the top line, pulling the brush upwards to get more thickness. You can use wax to set the colour and shape.
Hepburn used a combination of liquid liner and charcoal eye pencil to create that unforgettable doe-eyed look. Since the lining will be bold on both lids, opt for a minimalistic eye shadow in nude or light pink. Use an eye liner brush with a tight compact head, and starting from the inner corner, start lining as close to the lash line as possible, gliding over the roots of the lashes. As you reach the outer corner, apply more pressure to achieve a wider line on the outer corner. Stop widening as you pass the outer edge of the lash line, and taper upward in a gentle, curved flick for that trademark cat eye. To compliment the bold upper lid, apply a thick smudged line of dark brown charcoal pencil on the lower lid, to create a dramatic backdrop for the lower lashes. The shade applied on the lower lid should be lighter than the top liner. If the heavy-handed lining on both lids makes your eyes look smaller, use a white pencil liner on the innermost part of the lower lash line to open them out a bit.
If you want to go the whole hog, invest in some individual eye lashes and use them to replicate that luxuriant look Hepburn’s lashes had. Otherwise, you could just use two generous coats of mascara on each line of lashes. Use lash curlers.
Accentuate the cheekbones with a very light pink blush-on, just to give that flushed look. Blend it out in an upward motion. Keep the cheeks as subtle as possible.
Use your liner to delineate the outline; while marking out the upper lip, draw a defined bow shape. Hepburn rarely went for fire-engine reds or glossy shades: stick to matte shades of red, pretty pinks and berry colours. Steer clear of the gloss.
You’re all set to go. But remember to complement your make-up with goodness and grace, if you want to be a true diva like Hepburn, for “the beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode, but is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows.”
