Make your choice: Oil vs Conditioner

Should you oil, or should you condition? And do they have to be exclusive of each other?

Growing up, all I could remember was my mother reprimanding me for not oiling my hair. Now that I’m an adult, all I can see is my stylist reprimanding me for not conditioning my hair. Makes me wonder – since when did hair care have us biting our nails in confusion? Shampooing your hair is a given, everyone will agree, but the debate between oiling and conditioning seems to have more opinions than world politics. If you too feel this way, read on, as FAB BAG examines both rituals and what you need to do to have enviable tresses.

Oily affairs

Sticky senorita is probably the teasing nickname that comes to your mind when you think of hair oil. We don’t blame you. But guess what? The wisdom in grandma tales of regular oiling still holds true. Oil is a great natural conditioner that coats your hair with a protective layer and prevents them from becoming rough and frizzy. It’s a godsend for improving hair that has been worked up by excessive styling and colour. But know this, oiling your hair does not improve hair growth or help the follicles become any stronger. Oiling your tresses gets a definite green light from us. Couple of things you should keep a check on is the type and quantity of oil you use. Jojoba, coconut, almond, olive, the options are countless, so choose one that works best for your hair texture. Apply just enough oil to wet your hair and leave it in for at least an hour. Once done with that awesome massage, wash your hair making sure it’s squeaky clean without any traces of oil.

‘Conditions’ for smooth locks

It’s interesting to note that the genesis of conditioners is actually credited to the use natural oils to soften human hair. Modern day conditioners are used post shampoo to replenish the moisture lost after the wash. Picture this, excessive pollution leads to dirty hair that needs constant washing. Regular shampooing means a lot of natural oils being stripped from your tresses. Conditioner is a must because they maintain the pH level on hair shafts making them shiny and soft. The two types of hair conditioners commonly used are ordinary and leave-in. Ordinary conditioners are applied to wet hair after shampooing and left in for about three minutes before being rinsed off. Leave-in conditioners are lighter and left in the hair until the next wash. So take a look at your hair and hair-care habits before choosing from the countless options for conditioners available in stores.

Oil vs. Conditioner

So what is the final verdict between oiling and conditioning your hair? We say, why choose? Understand your hair and its needs and devise a routine that incorporates both. For example, if your hair is not terribly damaged, oiling them once or twice a week for an hour would be enough for shiny, luscious hair. Rough or dry hair always needs conditioning after a shampoo so weave in those 5 minutes in your bathroom. Also, if your mornings are a rush, opt for a good leave-in conditioner that you don’t need to bother rinsing off. Finally, if you are the lazy kind, head to your favourite salon for a relaxing hair spa. This hour long ritual of oiling, washing and deep conditioning will have you feeling relaxed and your hair singing hallelujah.
