From your Kitchen: VINEGAR

A disposition like vinegar may not be desirable but vinegar does go a long way in bringing out your true beauty!

Like so many other invaluable beauty products masquerading as health foods, fruit peels, flours, oils and juices in your kitchen cabinet, vinegar too is worth much more than simply packing an acidic punch into your salads or a bland bowl chow: the inexpensive kitchen essential leads a productive double life as a miracle-worker for shiny hair and healthy skin. While a touch too much of that vinaigrette in your food may leave you sour-faced with every spoonful, we guarantee that the incorporation of vinegar into your beauty regime will only bring you smiles, and a radiant glow to go with it. And what’s best about vinegar is that using it is as simple as pouring out a spoonful!

Sour power

No time for a visit to the salon, or wary of the pocket pinch? Try vinegar. Its chief benefit is to impart that shiny luxuriance to your hair that makes it look like it’s enjoyed hours of TLC at the parlour. Believe us when we tell you that a capful of kitchen vinegar in a mug of water can do what an expensive session with a stylist can’t: add a radiance and silkiness to your mane without blow drying it beyond recognition, or divesting it of every molecule of moisture. Hair is mildly acidic in nature, and vinegar, being an acetic acid solution itself, restores hair to its natural acidic state after shampoo, hair colour and other hair products that are usually alkaline disturb the ph balance of hair. Vinegar also acts as a clarifying agent, cleansing your locks and scalp of residual deposits of shampoo and hair product left behind even after a wash. Just rinse your hair with a diluted solution of vinegar and water after you shampoo, and wait for the compliments to pour in.

No more flakes

Stopped wearing black to hide the dandruff attack? Instead of pulling at your purse strings to try out every available dandruff shampoo in the stores, try this simple and inexpensive home remedy: before your next shampoo, just rub some undiluted kitchen vinegar into your scalp.

Skin-tillating

Is acne the ‘bane’ of your existence? Then vinegar is the only ‘dark knight’ that can vanquish it. Jokes apart, vinegar does have superpowers when it comes to ugly eruptions of zits and boils. Take a spray bottle, pour a mild solution of vinegar and water into it, and from time to time, spray the solution on affected areas such as your face, back and shoulders. Vinegar will shrink those resilient monsters to non-existence in a matter of days. But your woes don’t end there, with the acne leaving behind reminders in the form of ugly blemishes. Vinegar can be your saviour here as well. Add one part vinegar to 10 parts water, and dab the solution on the blemishes every day. With regular and disciplined application, the marks will fade away over time. Alternatively, you can apply a paste of honey, atta and vinegar on pimples at bedtime, leave it on all night, and wash it off gently when you wake next morning.

Itch-guard

If dry flaky skin is giving you the embarrassing itch, vinegar will provide it solace. Add half a mug of vinegar to a bath of lukewarm water, and soak your fretful skin into blissful oblivion. Vinegar is also a natural cleanser and toner with a mild astringent effect: it keeps the skin’s oiliness in check, thereby preventing nasty outbreaks.

There are myriad other uses: soaking you fingernails in a heavy solution of vinegar before you paint them will lock in colour and make it last longer. Significant other ran out of aftershave? Splash some apple cider vinegar on his cheeks and save the day. A small offering of vinegar from the kitchen to the altar of personal beauty does indeed go a long way.
