Kitchen Secrets: BEER
So you throw one super party and no one goes home sober, and your place is trashed with party remnants. So as you take stock of the damages next morning and reminisce of all the fun you had, you realize there is still a good amount of leftover beer in your keg. Fresh or flat, the idea of wasting beer is sacrilege to you, so we came up with some great tips of using that leftover ale to make yourself drop dead gorgeous for your next wild night.
Hic hic hair
While you know beer softens the mood of grouchy men, did you know it also softens hair? Beer is generally prepared from hops and malt, both of which are excellent sources of protein needed to strengthen and repair dry damaged locks. Beer also has other amazing nutrients like Biotin that prevents hair loss and helps promotes healthy hair growth. It also keeps dandruff away. Maltose found in beer aids in smoothening and tightening up hair cuticles so your tresses appear more shiny and full of life. Lager, ale beer, or light, it doesn’t really matter what brand of beer you get or if you mix different types of beer, as long as it’s flat. While you might balk at putting this smelly concoction in your hair, the results are worth it and the smell fades quickly.
- Simple Beer Hair Rinse: Apply flat warm beer all over your hair after shampooing and conditioning. Rinse out with lukewarm water. If you want to leave home smelling sweet, pour 1 cup boiled and cooled Chamomile tea on your locks and let it sit for 3-5 minutes and then rinse.
- Beer and Honey Hair Mask: Fork-mash 1 ripe banana until there are no lumps. Add 1 egg and blend till smooth, using a hand mixer if possible. Then pour ½ cup flat beer and add 1 tablespoon honey. Blend to a creamy consistency. Liberally apply beer and honey conditioning mask onto hair and scalp. Wait for some time, about 30 minutes or so, and wash it out with a mild shampoo.
- DIY Highlights: Use leftover light beer to add natural sun-kissed highlights to your hair. Simply empty 4-6 bottles into a basin. Saturate you hair in the beer and then head outside. Drink the other two beers while you wait for the beer to do its magic. About an hour later, rinse out your hair with cool water. Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner and style as usual.
Imagine soaking in a bathtub of beer with your favourite brewski in hand? Sounds weird? It’s not. Sitting in a tub of beer has become the latest rage across Europe, with several spas springing up in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, promising health, wellness by bathing in your favorite suds. The point: Beer is valued for its vitamins and drying properties which does wonders for your skin. Can’t afford the airfare? Pour your leftover beer into a small tub, add water in an amount equal to half of the beer, and soak for about twenty minutes. Voila! European spas have come to your doorstep.
A quick face mask with beer for a clear complexion can be achieved by mixing one cup beer, an avocado, a splash of vinegar, and a spoonful of honey in a small bowl. Apply to your face, and let sit for ten to fifteen minutes. You’ll notice clear pores and a fresher complexion after your c‘hic’ treatment.
