Prep Up: The detox way!

You can improve your skin with a simple weekend detox—and it doesn’t involve fasting, purging, or a complete rearrangement of your life.

Sounds familiar? If you’re the young cosmopolitan girl, this probably is your schedule through the working week. And on weekends, the party mode just amps up a notch. While we understand a girl needs her social life, step back for a moment and contemplate how your skin is keeping up with your schedule. Is it clear and radiant, which signs towards a healthy body? Or is it blemished and sallow which screams the need for a detox? The skin is the largest organ, and is exposed to the sun and pollution on the outside. The result is aging, allergies and skin disorders. A skin detox cleanses and nourishes one of the body’s most important organs. Don’t have time and money for a spa-treatment? Don’t worry. Here’s how.

Drink, and then drink more

Aqua is the world’s magical liquid when it comes to detoxifying. It not only delivers nutrients to our cells and keeps our kidneys functioning, but also flushes out the inner toxins and outer impurities. Dehydrate yourself and your skin will appear sallow and unhealthy no matter what type of makeup you put on. Be ready to guzzle at least 10 to 12 glasses of water during your weekend detox. If you have hard time drinking plain water, drop a few slices of lemon, orange, pineapple or a handful of raspberries into a pitcher of water for a fruit-infused treat.

Hot Oil Massage

Massage helps encourage circulation, which assists your body in getting rid of toxins. Mix equal amounts of coconut, almond and olive oils together, warm it and apply all over your facial and body skin. Give a warm massage while concentrating on areas like the neck, armpits, stomach, and behind the knees—where the lymph areas reside. Leave on the oil for 15-20 minutes and then get into a warm shower. It’ll refresh your skin instantly.

Dry Brushing

An age old method, dry bushing involves brushing your body skin when it is dry just before shower. The purpose is to slough off the outer layers of the skin, allowing the pores to breathe and detoxify more effectively.Don’t scrub too hard. Use just enough pressure to make your skin feel clean and glowing.

Sweat it out

Sweating is a great way to cleanse the pores naturally. You can indulge in any form of exercise you like whether it’s jogging, strolling, dancing, gardening, biking or just a brisk walk. The main idea is to increase blood circulation, relax muscles and most importantly, get rid of excess toxins through sweating. If a lazy bone is your nickname, you can switch the workout with a relaxing sauna session for similar effects.

Fake a facial at home

At the end of your detox, you’ll want to nourish and calm your complexion. Pour hot water into a small bowl and add a few drops of a citrus essential oil. Soak a hand towel in the water, then wring out and drape over your face. Lie down for ten minutes and let the steam open your pores, prepping your skin for the detoxifying mask that follows. For the facial, spread a few tablespoons of raw honey over your face. Next, apply cucumber slices on top of the honey. Cover your face with a warm, damp washcloth to allow the honey, a natural humectant, to seal in moisture. Honey’s anti-inflammatory properties also help reduce irritation and redness. Cucumbers, which act as diuretics, will further flush out excess fluid and relieve any remaining puffiness. You can also look for masks made with clay, which absorbs excess oil and pulls toxins and impurities out, while adding in necessary minerals.
