Most of us exercise at the gym, jog or cycle; but what happens to your fitness and workouts when it rains? Torrential downpour and overflowing drains can keep even the most enthusiastic of us confined at home. A workout break during the monsoon can spell disaster for your rhythm. You might just go from being a super active fitness freak to a lethargic couch potato. Luckily, where there is a will there is a way. If you are truly eager to keep your regimen going you can create a gym at home. Extra equipment is unnecessary. Your stairs, a chair, soup cans and a towel can help you work you out in ways you probably never imagined. Look to a rainy day as an opportunity to change your routine up and do things you don’t normally do to keep fit.
You might just be imagining little girls with pigtails, but studies have shown jumping rope is amazing for your body. Fitness experts say just 10 minutes of jumping rope at 150 turns per minute can burn up to 350 calories. It works because you are toning your upper and lower body at the same time, while boosting your heart rate. Just follow the proper jumping technique, by staying high on the toes and not jumping more than an inch off the floor. To keep it interesting, try doing fast intervals with short recoveries in between.
Find hula-hooping embarrassing? Would you reconsider if you knew that a 30-minute session can help you burn over 250 calories? Hula hooping is a challenging workout but has an element of playfulness that makes people want to keep at it. Apart from burning more calories, you get to work on your whole body, especially your torso and core muscles.
Use a rainy day to tackle those physical tasks you’ve been ignoring. Vacuum and shampoo your carpet. Move your furniture. Unpack boxes. Tidy your garage. Clean your refrigerator and stove. Paint your child’s room. Finish your basement. The cumulative effect of an entire day’s worth of work will burn those calories. Also, stair stepping is a great exercise to do in your home. If you don’t have a staircase, just find the heaviest book you own and start stepping up and down. Perhaps, the workout won’t get as intensive as jumping rope, but will definitely keep the body healthy and active.
If you can unroll a yoga mat in your room, you can attain fitness and nirvana, both. To make yoga a great calorie-burner, focus on repeating moves that engage your largest muscle groups and get your heart rate up. All hail the era of YouTube. You can search for a ton of workout videos on the website and chose the one you like. This eliminates the need to use workout DVDs, and it allows you to mix up your exercise regime to avoid monotony and lose weight. YouTube is also great if you want to do a traditional workout with push-ups, squats, and crunches, but are unsure on how to go about them.
