For your lips: Lipstick or Lip gloss

Caught between a super lipstick and a delicious gloss? Here are some points to ponder…

Taking care of your lips is serious business, given that we use to them to pout, pucker and kiss – all very important and effective methods for getting what we want. Now, there are tons of products available for the lips, from balms to gloss to lipsticks. With lipsticks and lip glosses vying for space on the shelves, it’s tough to choose between them.

 Stay order

Most lipsticks stick around for around two hours, though if you’re sipping on a lot of beverages, they’ll go off faster. Lip gloss, on the other hand, start out very smooth and shiny, but wears off in about an hour and needs frequent re-applications, though some have been known to last longer.

Hue-dunnit

Colour on your mouth is imperative lipstick usually wins over gloss here. Lipsticks are known for richer deeper colour and creamier texture. This also goes with the trend that lipstick is meant for the more mature woman, as opposed to lip gloss, which is sometimes seen as a pre-cursor to lipstick. However, though lip glosses are starting to catch up with promising long-lasting colour.

Pricey affair

Price-wise, lip glosses still maintain a slight edge, starting at around Rs 200 and going up to Rs 2,000. Lipsticks start at a higher price, around Rs 300-400, and can run into Rs 3,000 if you’re buying high-end brands such as Yves St Laurent or Chanel. There really isn’t much of a difference any longer, especially as most women like using lipstick and then a touch of gloss.

Shape up

Bring bolder and creamier lipstick brings greater definition to your mouth, especially if used with lip liner. Gloss on the other hand, makes your pout look fuller and adds a shine, bringing the focus on your mouth. A flaw that nearly lipsticks have however, is that they bleed. No matter how carefully you’ve applied, that little stain of colour will edge out into the corners of your mouth. Gloss on the other hand stays put, albeit for a shorter while.

It’s a tough job to choose between lipstick and lip gloss. Lipstick goes with a clean base and basic eye makeup, while gloss complements heavy smokey eyes. However, a sheer gloss still adds on to a coat of lipstick. So, maybe you can use lip gloss when you’re out for the day or on a casual outing, and keep the intense rouge lipstick for the night. And hey, if you still can’t choose, just buy both and use in moderation.
