Ask a woman what signs of aging worry her most and the common answer will be fine lines, loose skin and of course wrinkles. But there’s another thing that bothers women just as much; age spots. These are small dark patches that can range from the size of a freckle to nearly half an inch on your face, hands and neck. Age spots are usually due to long-term exposure to ultraviolet light in the sun, than aging itself.
What are age spots?
Technically called hyperpigmentation, they are caused by over-production of melanin. Melanin is what gives skin its color, but when produced in excess, it is unable to disperse itself evenly over the skin. As a result, melanin pigments clump in bunches, forming a noticeable brown spot. Some people are even genetically inclined to develop age spots. Also, fair skinned people are more prone to developing age spots than those with darker skin because the body is used to producing more melanin to protect the light skin. Age spots are sometimes called liver spots, which may lead to the common misconception that they are connected to the health of one’s liver. The term is often used to describe the color of some age spots, which are usually brown.
Zap them off
Even if a person takes the best possible care of their skin, age will still leave its mark in the form of age spots. Age spots can be unsightly and have the potential to grow and become a cosmetic concern if not treated. Reducing them is a serious challenge. Some treatments available at a dermatologist include Dermabrasion or Microdermabrasion which sands the top layer of skin to treat sun damage and age spots. One can also opt for a Chemical Peel that temporarily ‘burn’ the outer layer of skin leading it to peel, resulting in a gradual disappearance of the sun spots. Laser or Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are also popular and good for removing freckles and brown discoloration.
Invasive methods are not the only solution to reduce age spots. One of the safest options is the use of skin brightening creams. After all, age spots stand out because their colour tone is different from the rest of the skin. A whitening cream can make the skin tone consistent and even aid in reducing the appearance of age spots or other skin tone imperfections. A topical skin brightening cream is effective because they can be applied to target the affected areas. They are also easy-to-use, relatively inexpensive compared to clinical skin treatments and safer than skin bleaching creams.
Finally prevention is better than cure, so while you revel is the gradual fading remember, to minimize the risk factors cause them in the first place. Sun safety is the key here. Avoid or limit direct sun exposure, especially when sunlight is most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Use proper sunscreens that are considered broad spectrum and protect against both UVA and UVB radiation. Use at least an SPF of 15 (30 for fair-skinned individuals) and apply 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Clothing, sunglasses hats and umbrellas will just aid the sunscreen further. If you want, you can go a step further by applying sun protective film to your car and home to filter UVA radiation from the sun.
