Hair Conditioning: Kitchen

A hot cuppa, a favorite book and a heavy downpour outside your window pane – rainy season seems so romantic. The flip side? Dull, frizzy and unmanageable hair!

Due to excessive humidity during monsoon, the cuticle or the outer layer of hair gets swollen and lifts up. This gives way to increased volume and dull appearance resulting into frizzy and unmanageable tresses. The only respite comes from deep conditioners. But these hair treatments need not be chemical, try some from the kitchen instead!

 Honey and olive oil

This is one of the easiest deep conditioners that can be made at home and is super effective in taming mad curls. In a bowl, take equal quantity of honey and olive oil. Warm a little and apply the mixture on dry hair. Wear a shower cap. Follow this with hot towel therapy. During monsoon, as dandruff problem aggravates, add juice of half a lemon to your mixture.

Fruit salad

So sure, eating a bowl of fruit salad everyday will no doubt add to both nutrition and health, but here we are talking about a fruit salad, for the hair. In a blender blitz a banana, a slice of ripened avocado, a slice of cantaloupe, a spoon of thick curd and a spoon of extra virgin olive oil. Apply to your hair. Wear a shower cap and let the mixture stay for an hour. The enzymes present in fruits nourish and condition hair roots while olive oil provides strength to hair.

Egg, mayonnaise and olive oil

Egg and mayonnaise make excellent deep conditioners. They make the hair soft and silky. In a bowl, take 2 spoons of mayonnaise, one egg and 2 spoons of olive oil. Mix all of them together and apply liberally on hair. Wear a shower cap and let it stay for an hour. Do not follow with any heat treatment as egg will tend to cook with heat. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Shampoo and condition to get any egg smell out your hair.

 Egg, banana and aloe vera

In this deep conditioning hair mask, take only the yolk of an egg. If you have very long hair, go for two egg yolks. Add an over ripened banana and 2 spoons of pure aloe vera gel. Also add a spoon each of olive oil, glycerin and honey. Mix all of them together in a blender so that fibers of banana do not appear on your hair. Apply this deep conditioning pack on your hair and wear a shower cap. You can leave this mixture for 3-4 hours or may be over night. Shampoo and condition as usual for a soft and manageable mane.

The science behind it all:

  • Olive oil has anti-inflammatory property that prevents dandruff.  It contains vitamin E and mono-unsaturated fatty acids which act as antioxidants and promote healthy hair growth.
  • Honey acts as an emollient and humectant, which in turn helps to retain moisture and softens hair. It also has antibacterial property.
  • Protein present in egg strengthens hair follicle which is also made up of protein.
  • Banana protects elasticity of hair thus minimizing breakage and split ends.
  • Aloe vera has antifungal properties which keeps dandruff and itchy scalp at bay. It acts as natural moisturizer and prevents hair fall. It also balances pH level of hair.
