FAB TIPS: Beat that Sweat!

Women glow, men perspire and pigs sweat, goes the saying, but with the summer in full swing, ‘don’t sweat it’ is a mantra that’s hardly easy to follow.

Sweating isn’t medically harmful, in fact, it’s essential to maintain body temperature and signal healthy and normal bodily function. Additionally, it cleanses the skin while releasing toxins and brings moisture back into the body.  Excessive sweating on the other hand is a lot like tequila- tolerable in small doses, but unbearable when well, sweat buckets. People with this problem aka hyperhidrosis face tremendous emotional and psychological distress. So as the heat intensifies, if your sweats glands are working like a car wash than a dripping faucet, try these simple cures along with your deodorant to stay dry.

  • Lifestyle changes: You may not realize it, but chances are that certain foods that you are eating may be the main reason that you sweat excessively. Known as “sweat foods” these include garlic, onions and overload of spices. Carrying extra weight, smoking, alcohol intake or caffeine can all increase sweat as well. So watch your diet. Eat fruits and vegetables that are high in water content. While these may not necessarily reduce perspiration, they help reduce the awful body odor that is often experienced when you do sweat excessively.
  • Clothes: Your clothes can impact your body and sweating more than you think.  Walking around wearing a lot of thick or un-breathable material only ensures that heat will be trapped next to your body.  The warmer you become the more likely you are to start sweating and stay sweating. Avoid tight, restrictive clothing and man-made fibres, such as nylon. Wearing white or black clothing can minimize the signs of sweating. Try wearing armpit shields that absorb excessive sweat and protect your clothes. You can also wear socks that absorb moisture and shoes made of leather, canvas or mesh rather than synthetic material.
  • Corn Starch\Baking Soda: It is a well known fact that corn starch helps with a sweating problem by absorbing the excessive sweat. You can use corn starch on pretty much any area of your body that faces a lot of sweating, whether it be your underarms, back or any place else. Baking soda is also known to work in a similar way and is believed to help unclog the skin’s pores and release all toxins. Keep in mind not to overuse the baking soda because you might just burn your skin. If you don’t find the idea icky, rubbing turnip or lemon juice has also been scientifically proven to help prevent excessive sweating. Turnip juice reduces the activity of sweat glands while the acidic nature of lemon juice kills the odor in sweat.

  • Body Scrubs: Consider a good body scrub once or twice a week for relief from excessive sweating. Body scrubs exfoliates the skin, which ultimately help unclog your pores. You may experience more sweating at first, but after all the trapped toxins inside your pores are flushed out, you are likely to notice a reduction in your sweating.
  • Zinc Supplements: If home remedies don’t work for you, try taking a zinc supplement to control BO. Much like lemon juice, zinc works to provide relief by zapping the bacteria that thrives on sweat. You can take zinc in a pill form but be sure to consult your doctor for the right dosage.
  • Botox: Surgical options are a final step if nothing else is helping to stop those floodgates. Speak to your doctor about getting Botox injections. Botox were approved by the FDA in 2004 for treating hyperhidrosis. The procedure takes about 10 minutes. Each armpit gets 10 to 20 shots of Botox — 50 milligrams in each pit and is known to show a significant reduction of sweat. Another option is the miraDry Procedure which eliminates sweat glands in the underarm safely and non-invasively, so people can expect lasting results and stop excessive underarm sweat.
