FAB Tip: Potato For Skin
Boiled potatoes look good on your dining table, but your dressing table too may glean some beauty benefits…
One wouldn’t really think of potatoes as pretty, especially when you think in terms like ‘couch potato’ and ‘dumpy as a sack of potatoes.’ Boiled potatoes certainly don’t have much charm (I read somewhere that they are pigs’ favourite food). However, rumour and research have it, that the plain, old potato can do wonders as beauty treatment.
- Due to their Vitamin C and alkaline content, potatoes are great for the skin. If you’ve got dry skin, this is a quick and effective vegetable to use in a moisturising mask. Boil the potato (without peeling the skin off) and crush it with a spoon. Let it cool. Add two spoons of milk powder and a spoon of almond oil. Apply this pack on your face and watch those dry patches vanish
- Sweet potatoes are also known to do good things for your skin. Here’s a rather unusual mask for you to try. Peel and cube two sweet potatoes, boil them and drain the water out. Mash them with a spoon and add two tablespoons of beer (the hops in beer are said to relax the skin!). Apply on your face and neck, leave on for around 20 minutes and wash off with warm water. Apply a moisturiser after to further give TLC to skin.
No shades of grey
No part of the potato is wasted when it comes to beauty treatments. Potato peels are said to keep your hair healthy and hide any signs of greys. If you’ve already coloured your hair, this will ensure your pretty highlights remain for longer. Save your potato peels and boil them in water. Strain this water, let it cool and use it as an after-shampoo rinse. You can store this water and use it for every alternate hair wash to darken your hair and brighten your colouring.
Oh my feet
You’ve had a long day at work, but you’ve got a date to dancing at that newly-opened club with a guy you really fancy. Your feet are protesting. Alternately, you’ve been dancing all night in 4” heels and your feet are dying either way. Not to worry. Since you’ve been boiling potatoes anyway, store the water in which they’re boiled. Soak your feet in it for 15-20 minutes and you’re ready for dancing. Or work. Or both. Soaking your feet in water leftover from boiling sweet potatoes is also known to relieve joint pain and arthritis. This is one tip our grannies swore by, so pass it on.
While the goodness of boiled potatoes is nothing to be sneezed at, the raw potato has its share of beauty goodies too. The juice of the potato has multiple uses, such as erasing wrinkles and helping blemishes to fade. Washing your face daily with raw potato juice clears your skin and refreshes it after a long day. And of course, there is the well-known cure for dark circles and bags under the eyes, in the form of raw potato slices.
