Say Goodbye To Summer Zits
With unwavering constancy, these pesky little devils break out every summer, cropping up on your chest, back, shoulders, even calves – here’s how to combat summer acne!
The heat is on (and how!) and its time to root through your closet and dig out those long-forgotten seasonal friends: flattering sleevelesses, cute capris, and strappy numbers that have enjoyed their winter hibernation. Unfortunately, a long-forgotten foe has also reared its ugly head, threatening to throw your summer sartorial plans into complete disarray. Pimples, zits, boils: call them what you want, summer acne is here to stay for the new few months. But don’t bid a tearful goodbye to that summer dress just yet: Following a few simple rules can keep the painful boils at bay. Here’s what you do:
Wash it away
Since acne is primarily caused by the action of bacteria on sweat, oil and dirt in your pores, the trick lies in keeping your skin squeaky clean, so that at least two of the four factors that spawn the bacteria – oil and dirt – are unavailable. Bathe at least twice every day, especially if you are spending time outdoors. Full-body baths prevent dirt and grime from accumulating in nooks and crannies, or bacteria from acting on these particles and creating happy little colonies that show up on your skin as the dreaded summer zit.
- While all skin care experts (as well as common sense) will tell you that exfoliating is good for your skin throughout the year, it cannot be stressed enough just how much of a game-changer it can be during summer months, especially if you are acne-prone. Instead of adding more chemicals to the scene, invest in a pair of exfoliating gloves and use it to gently scrub your skin in the shower every day. Avoid areas with existing acne, as that might worry the skin further and cause the infection to spread.
- Use cleansers that are gentle on your skin but effective in removing grime, say a foaming cleanser without soap. If a mild cleanser is not making the cut, you might have to look for one with salicylic acid, which fights bacteria. But don’t use it on a regular basis at the very outset, because the chemical has a tendency to leach your skin of necessary moisture. Use it on alternate nights initially, giving your skin time to adjust.
- Too much of a good thing can be bad. If you strip away too much oil, your oil glands will try to overcompensate and produce even more of the shiny stuff, triggering off the acne cycle all over again. To regulate oil content without stripping skin dry of moisture, use herbal wet wipes instead of washing your face with cleanser each time. Don’t use soap or cleanser every time you bathe in a day: just wash with water.
Be a tea-hugger
Befriend tea-tree oil. It’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties not only prevent potential outbreaks, they also gradually erase tell-tale signs left behind by the last contagion. Dab gently on areas that have or had acne breakouts. And when all else fails, keep calm and use Cetaphil (watch this website for more on this miracle-worker)
It’s also a good idea to grab an oil-free moisturiser. Go for one that contains a chemical called dimethicone, which soaks up excess oil and prevents it from clogging your pores. BB cream also works wonders in this department. If you have oily skin, you are sure to be in the acne-prone danger zone. Apply an oil-controlling face mask once in a while.
