Juggling career and the home-front while managing our ‘darker’ halves, kids, families and somehow also coming through for friends – we ladies are born multitaskers! De-stressing should be our reward.

Unless you’re superwoman, shining through so many facets in life is bound to create some stress. Shooing away the idea of being hassled won’t help, because if ignored, stress will cause illness.  Also, on the other hand, we understand you don’t have the time and bank balance for expensive de-stressing spas and getaways. That’s why we came up these 5 DIY tips to unwind at home. So hit pause, relax and indulge in some TLC the hard worker in you deserves.

Break a Sweat

Whether you’re exhausted, frustrated, or just plain stressed-out, nothing beats the blues like getting your blood pumping. Exercise can help our brains move into a state of relaxation, because a work out releases endorphins aka happy hormones. If you’re not a gym person, try outdoor activities like jogging, swimming or cycling. Got a dog? Take him for a nice, long walk or jog. Slip on your sneakers and you’re good to go! Fringe benefits are you getting toned!

Say Om

Yoga is a proven stress buster because it stimulates that part of your spine that relaxes the body and mind. Even if yoga’s not your thing, basic meditation, stretching and breathing techniques can work wonders for you to loosen that tension stored in your body. To meditate, find a relaxing atmosphere, sit on level ground, close your eyes, relax every muscle and breathe deeply with your chest. Focus on each inhale and exhale to exclude other thoughts and quieten your mind.

Spa at Home

Turn your bathroom into a nirvana lounge with soothing music, dim lights, candles and fresh towels. Tell your family\roommates not to call on you for a few hours as you indulge in a mini spa with an old fashioned warm bubble bath. Why? Submerging in a bath tub relieves your body from the constant pull of gravity and warm water relaxes muscle, improving circulation and energy flow. Try a modern day milk bath by mixing together 1 tablespoon each of dried rosemary and mint with 1 peeled orange and half a cup of powdered milk. Stir this concoction in 2 cups of boiling water and pour the herbal milk solution into your bath under the running water. Soak in the tub. Rinse off and follow up with some light natural oil such as almond or light sesame oil to look like a natural diva.

Cook and Clean

Sounds too domestic? It is, but it works wonders for your anxiety. Make a meal for yourself and let the culinary sensations of scent, sight and touch mesmerise you. Research shows that the process of chopping, measuring, stirring and sautéing can be incredibly therapeutic. Take pride in the sense of accomplishment as you slowly enjoy your delicious meal, maybe with a glass of your favourite wine. Roll up your sleeves and get your living space in order. While no one is asking you to be a Monica from the sitcom Friends, know this; a clean, organised home can do wonders for your stress level. If you can control the area you live in, you feel better equipped to control other factors in your life. Plus, you don’t waste time having to look for everything all the time.

Feel beautiful and dance

You can’t beat the glee you feel when you put on that red lipstick and those high heels. Dressing up and putting on some make up give your confidence an instant boost and you feel you can handle anything. So after that amazing home spa, deck up in your favourite outfit and strut a little. If you don’t feel like heading out, just crank up the music, and dance in the privacy of your own home. It’s a great stress reliever because it renews your sense of creativity and revitalises your energy.
