Makeup Brushes To The Rescue!
Fingers or sponges just don’t do it right: with fingers, the blending is often uneven and you can’t reach into corners and crevasses for the perfect finish. Moreover, using your fingers for an array of products in a short session could spoil your expensive products – for instance, the residue of blush on your fingertips could sully your tub of lip colour or eye shadow. Sponges often leave behind tell-tale streaks or the dreaded ‘caked make-up’ effect. Brushes, on the other hand, give you complete control of where your make-up is going, what it’s being blended with, how light or dark the tones are, how much depth they’re giving your face. You can use them to trace the perfect wing with your eyeliner, add subtle tones to your eye lids, mask blotchy skin, or highlight your cheek bones. Which ones do you need?
Slathering on foundation with your fingers can be messy and the results leave much to be desired. Give those fingers some hard-earned rest and try foundation brushes – chances are you’ll never go back. Whether its primer, liquid foundation, crème base, or even tinted moisturiser, nothing spreads out your base make-up better than these flat, wide brushes, giving you perfect coverage and a flawless appearance. Use the brush with wide sweeps to spread foundation outward to either side of your nose. Use the tapering edge of the brush to reach into tricky corners. Use a blending brush to blend out any obvious make-up lines or streaks that are left behind.
Now anyone who knows anything about the fine art of applying make-up will tell you that the trick lies not just in choosing the shades and tones that complement each other, but in making them merge and blend harmoniously into one another, highlighting your features without making your face look like a well-used palette. For this, a blending brush is indispensable. Use it to diffuse concealer and camouflage your dark circles or other tell-tale patches. Use it blend in sharp edges of make-up or lines and angles that are too visible – whether its blush-on, eye shadow or foundation. These fluffy brushes with their characteristic tapered shape have the additional advantage of being as soft as a cat’s furry paw – could put you to sleep after a hard day’s work!
These are the most easily identifiable, thanks to their unique shape. They are ideal for application of eye make-up: contouring or highlighting your brow bone, or even blending in eye-brow colour after you stipple it in. It actually works better than regular eye-liner brushes when you want to achieve that perfect ‘wing’-ed line of eye liner. You can also use them to line your lips or etch out a whole new daring lip line or a cupid’s bow. It adds a clean, precise line and its angular shape helps add colour on to the contours of your countenance. While picking out your brush, make sure it is firm but not stiff enough to abrade or inflame your skin.
How do you identify them? Well, take one look and you’ll never forget! These flat-topped, dark coloured trapezoid brushes always have a top-most layer of white fibres – reminiscent of a skunk’s fur! Stippling brushes are known for giving high-definition ‘airbrushed’ or ‘sprayed on’ results as you use them not to spread, but to ‘pat on’ or ‘press in’ make-up, in little dots. It is ideal for application of products like bronzer, crème and powder blushes, foundation, finishing powder and highlighter, especially when you want to use them in high concentration. Remember to pat (or fleck) make-up instead of swirling it when using this brush, to get best results. You could use a light touch of a blending brush later to even out sharp edges.
If you want that hint of alluring shine and shimmer when you step out for the night, a dome brush will help you achieve it with some bronzer. Use it to contour, highlight your cheekbones or chin to get the best out of your bone structure. Their tapered shape helps spread pigment in a smooth and seamless manner.
