Beauty Secrets: Wine

Love your tipple? Now even your face will thank you for that wine, as long as you apply some too!

If you thought the bliss of your favourite Merlots, Shiraz and Pinot Noirs could only tickle your taste buds, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Imagine sinking yourself in a tub of Cabernet Sauvignon or caressing your baby smooth skin after a Chardonnay exfoliant… For all you wine lovers, try Vinotherapy, the crème de la crème luxury for those who want to pamper themselves.

So what is Vinotherapy?

The theory behind wine therapy lies in the essence of the grape. The seed, skin and leaves of the grape contain polyphenols which have been proven to exert antioxidants, or anti-free radicals, that aid in the fight against ageing, by restoring collagen and elastic fibers. It also contains valuable vitamins and trace elements, which are known to have a rejuvenating effect on the skin. More than just a fun drink isn’t it?

How does it work?

Vinotherapy has a platter of different offerings. Vinotherapy spa treatments use the residue of wine (skin, seeds and pulp) in wraps, massages and body scrubs. You can also try wine baths where patrons are bathed in naturally hot water mixed with extracts of wine and grapes. The wine bath drains the skin of impurities by increasing circulation and also effectively battles against ageing. The most popular form of wine therapy is facials. This process involves cleansing the skin with some cold wine mixed with oats to coax the pollution off from the skin. After steaming, a wine and aloe vera scrub is applied to remove the dead skin. Finally a fragrant wine based face pack is applied that will have you swimming in giddy tides. Wine masks and facials brighten the skin by removing dead cells and stimulating blood circulation to the skin surface. They nourish and moisturize the skin, adding a wonderful glow. The skin becomes softer and the texture improves. Over time facials using wine extracts help remove tan and produce an even colour skin tone.

What wine to go for?

Every wine has a different composition so it’s important to choose a specific wine during this therapy. Sweet white wines have water binding properties so are ideal for dry skin. To combat flaky skin, dry wine is perfect as it possess a great concentration of the natural citric and malic acid. Red wine is great for acne prone or oily skin because of its high intensity of polyphenol, a chemical that helps reduce inflammation and tighten pores. Red wine is also fantastic for anti-aging facial treatments.

Where to try it?

Vinic treatment is fast becoming the latest buzz in beauty circles. Spas and salons across the country are now offering various forms of vinotherapy at a price which generally start from Rs. 1500. You can try wine-Based Spa Therapies at The Four Fountains Spa, Mumbai, Mahanirvan Spa, Pune, Shenaz Hussain Signature Salons, nationwide,  Naturals, Nationwide and at Trans Studio Unisex Salon, Bangalore

At home: Wine Mask

Whip one cup of plain yogurt with four tablespoons of red wine. Now soak a towel in hot water and place it over your face for five minutes, or steam your face a bit to open up pores. This will allow the skin to soak up the benefits the best. Apply the mask evenly, avoiding the eye area. Wait 10-15 minutes and then and rinse with cool water for gorgeously glowing skin. What to do with the rest of the wine you ask, cheers!
