Heal Your Skin
If you were asked to choose what was more problematic between dry and oily skin, which would you pick? 9 out of 10 women we asked, opted for the latter. Not surprising because for most women, dry skin is not cause enough for a beauty uproar. Except during winter months, we don’t fret and fuss over it like we do over acne or cellulite. But to have skin that feels like sandpaper is a beauty sin, not to say uncomfortable and even maddening…
Parched, and how!
In a single sentence, you skin becomes dry when it loses water and its natural oils. It is unable to cope up with the usual eccentricities of weather resulting in the skin’s hydration being sucked into the dehumidified air. Soaps too can seep into chapped skin and aggressively clean out the natural oils. Other contributing factors include dehydration in the body, caused by less water intake or too much sugar and caffeine consumption. Also, irritants in your perfumes, laundry detergent and your skin care products can aggravate the skin and cause dryness. But mostly if you don’t have a chronic problem, dry skin is a condition usually limited to winters.
SOS and rescue
Chapped skin is an urgent SOS call that needs rescuing, because without intervention, the dryness will multiply. Acting the superhero to your skin here is actually quite simple. Just stop exposing yourself to situations that decrease oil and water content, and indulge in some TLC for a healthy skin.
- If you can, avoid tap water while cleansing your skin. The deposits in tap water will further parch an already chapped face. You can lightly apply a spray of mineral water on your face with a spray bottle.
- Dry skin needs thorough cleaning but in the most gentle manner. Instead of commercial soaps, use a non-detergent, neutral-pH product to cleanse your face.
- DIY Tip: Twice a week, 15 minutes before taking your bath, mix 1 egg yolk with a teaspoon of orange juice, olive oil, rose water and a few drops of lime juice and apply on your skin. This little homemade mixture will have your skin soft and supple in no time.
Nourish and smoothen your skin with whole milk twice a week. The lactic acid in milk acts as a mild cleanser, and the fat is extra moisturising. Take about a cup of milk and use a soft washcloth to massage it into your skin. The washcloth will also exfoliate so you kill two birds with one stone.
An absolute unbreakable rule for dry skin is to moisturise it. Moisturizing will add the oil back to your skin and help to trap water. A good moisturiser should contain natural oils like kojoba, almonds and olive or ingredients like glycerin, lanolin and hyaluronic acid. Of course, we must mention having a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol and drinking plenty of water will go a long way in preventing dry skin.
