Skincare Peel Off Orange 1

Peel Off Orange!

Eat that orange but don’t throw away the peel. Use it to amp your beauty routine instead…

Picture this: a crisp, golden afternoon, your favourite quilt on the well-worn terrace mattress, a well-thumbed book – and a couple of plump, perfectly ripened oranges, just waiting to be unpeeled. While you’ll agree that only a few things in life can get better than this, oranges in fact have far more to offer than mere sweetness to your indolence. There are potent secrets tucked away in the humble, oft-ignored peel of this delectable fruit – secrets that will nurse your beleaguered skin back to the pink of health.

Super‘Peel’

Now it’s no secret that oranges and other citrus fruits (limes, lemons, musambis, you get the picture) are bursting with the goodness of vitamin C. But a cool fact that school biology probably forgot to tell you is that it’s the peel of the orange or the lemon that stores the higher concentration of our friendly neighbourhood vitamin that is armed with superpowers for your skin. Creams and injections are a passé, for vitamin C contains ascorbic acid, which stimulates the production of collagen. Yes, you read that right: collagen, the fabled elixir for youthful skin that so many would gladly spend a fortune on.

And if that isn’t enough, here’s more good news. Ever heard of free radicals? These unsociable molecules, which increase in number as you get along in years, keep grating against your skin cells, robbing them of collagen and vitality, leaving behind trails in the form of tell-tale wrinkles and lines. Believe us when we tell you that Vitamin C is your best bet against these villains, thanks to its restorative and anti-oxidising properties.

Super‘Recipes’

Enough said. Here’s an easy-breezy and inexpensive (we mean it) DIY guide to fresh looking skin, à la orange.

  • Soak up the sun: Your hours on the terrace may be limited, but let those peels bask in the sun for a couple of days, till they are desiccated completely, taking on a shriveled appearance. The texture will now be harder, coarser than before.
  • ‘Packed’ with goodness:  Now head for the kitchen and arm yourself with a blender. Divide the peels into two portions. Grind one portion to a fine powder – this will be the key element for a rejuvenating, cleansing face pack.
  • Scrub it up: Take the other portion and give it a shorter whirl in the mixer, so you have a slightly coarser, more granular heap – and voilà, you have the most effective natural scrub, which will exfoliate your skin, leaching it of impurities and pollutants that lurk in pores and over time develop into stubborn pimples or acne.
  • Milking it: Scrubs or masks using orange peel are particularly effective for oily skin, as they drain out the excess oils that may clog pores and cause nasty stubborn outbreaks. But just to balance out the astringent effect of the citric acid, it would be a good idea to add fresh yogurt or cold milk to your paste. These ingredients will help restore any lost moisture, leaving behind baby-soft, happy and irresistible skin. In conjunction with yogurt and milk, orange peel will work miracles on tanned, weather-beaten skin, restoring it to its pristine complexion.
